MLO Partners with NAMI Urban LA for National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Mu Lambda Omega had a supreme day of service to all mankind as we partnered with NAMI Urban Los Angeles to celebrate their 20 years of service to the community and to commemorate July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Bebe Moore Campbell, author and mental health advocate, was an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a co-founder of NAMI Urban Los Angeles. It was a day of rich cultural expression by S.H.I.N.E. Mawusi Women’s African Drum Circle, St. Brigid Gospel Choir who sang Lift Every Voice and Sing, Wildhorse Native American Singers, and the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center Youth Jazz Combo. They set the tone and nourished the spirit. Then our own MLO member, Dr. Jeshana Avent-Johnson, moderated a panel of mental health professionals to explore and combat stigma around mental health issues. They discussed the progress and successes in mental health healing strategies and increased mental health community awareness. We learned about the resources that are available through NAMI and it was an amazing time of connection among all who attended. It was our pleasure to participate and to serve!
